Dampening and Pressure Safety - Beware of Pressure Vessel Codes

They may give you only half the safety, shorter life, and at twice the price.

Safety 40 year proven. Under our license from MartinPacker.com PulseGuard provides you with the safety benefit of dampers that the licensor designed based on tests to destruction of the pressure enclosures, that he destroyed from 1965. Since 1965 all newly designed dampers have been similarly tested to destruction, to ensure controlled venting of energy, stored within them by the containment of compressible fluid.

The licensed products are subject to cyclic stress variations; however by their very nature as dampers, the cyclic variations are "soft". In 1968 our predecessor licensees adopted the allowable working stresses of ASME 2 part D, with a minimum ductility of 20 percent. There have been no vessel failures of this design for 40 years. However the ASME International have now increased the allowable stress figures in their code, and the European pressure equipment directive promotes the use of their unproven harmonized pressure vessel code. That code allows the use of materials with as little as 14% elongation / ductility, and the use of higher working stresses that are proven suitable since 1965.

Both codes mentioned above are for static pressure vessels. Neither of them are proven suitable for the purpose of pulsation dampers. It is a prime requirement of ISO 9001 that products and services be suitable for service and safe in use.

If therefore you were to specify either code, we could not certify as to safety or suitability, hence they could not be covered by ISO 9001-2000, accordingly then the products could not have the CE mark, and if they had the ASME U stamp, we would have to remove all warrantee In addition the certification of weld procedure specifications under the harmonized pressure vessel code, is less than suitable for the products. Beware of pressure vessel codes imposed by those who have not analyzed them for suitability in this application.

In damper designs that are not designed to "fail-safe", for example those built to ASME (dangerous) code, there may be a burst. The burst will have the stored energy of the pressurized gas behind it. This can spread danger, endangering the life of emergency response persons. Note: even under the CE pressure equipment directive CE marking code gas burst discs are not mandatory.

If you are in Europe or the USA, you may have a damper that is not constructed in accordance with our safety design code. This manufacturer removes all warrantees of safety in the USA where the equipment is made to ASME or CE rules, so be sure your system is protected by an overpressure relief device. Also note: Canada no longer accepts vessels to American code, being adequately safe.

1. Ensure that your mounting method does not prevent built in safe features from protecting you.

2. Where the substances are toxic, carcinogens, or pyroforic, check the damper has secondary containment sealing and double layer membrane with leak detection from between them.
